11/8/07 A Frosty Start, but is rain on the way? What about Flurries?

Our temps fell like a rock under a clear sky and calm wind last night and this morning. High and mid level clouds rolling in during the early morning hours put a limit to the cooling, but this came after many fell into the 20s to around 30. Most woke to frosty start.  Chattanooga has seen it's two coolest mornings since the freeze back on April 7-8. While Chattanooga fell to 31, many dipped into the 20s for the second time this week.  Just a few of the cool spots:

Andrews, NC: 21

Chatsworth, GA: 22

Just to the southwest of Murphy, NC: 23

Fort Payne, AL: 23

Bledsoe State Forest: 23

Decatur, TN: 24

Scottsboro, AL: 25

Tellico Plains, TN:25

Dalton, GA: 26

Rossville, GA: 27

Chickamauga, GA: 27

Jasper, TN: 27

Whitwell, TN: 27

Cleveland, TN: 27

Chattanooga: 31 The overall flow is from the northwest as a couple of short waves, i.e. weak storm systems, quickly move in from the upper Midwest. Both will bring with them a canopy of broken high and mid level clouds but no precipitation. South winds will help aid in a slightly warmer day with many reaching the mid to upper 50s. Our winds continue into tonight and Friday as lows fall to the mid and upper 30s, and back into the 60s for Friday afternoon.

High pressure rules the weekend with plenty of sunshine and just a few clouds. Highs will reach the mid 60s with lows in the 40s.

Long-range models have hinted at a rainy scenario for either Tuesday or Wednesday over the last several days. The GFS long-range model below moved the chances up to Tuesday and now brings a much cooler pocket of air in for Wednesday and Thursday, maybe a few flurries. This is similar to the runs from last week but much different than yesterday’s model run, making the forecast difficult. Click on map to enlarge.

Wednesday PM:

Thursday:

Other long-range models are not in agreement.

Something fun to watch.

See you soon,

Brian
