6/29/09 The Good, The Bad and the Less Humid!
After another weekend scorcher, and a few storms, the region will quiet down with a cooler, drier air mass moving in!
Some of the storms over the weekend knocked down trees and power lines as well as providing torrential rain for some. The most significant storm report came out of Madisonville, TN were part of a roof was blown off a business along hwy 411. Rainfall amounts varied around the area with some picking nearly an inch!
First, the good news:
Monday-Thursday. High pressure will continue to build in from the southern plains leading to plenty of sunshine over the region. At the same time, a large “spring-like” area of low pressure will spin over the Great Lakes. The two will combine to give us winds from the north and west bringing in slightly cooler, but significantly drier air. This means it will not be as HUMID in the afternoon! The biggest reward will be in the evening and overnight. Lows over the next few mornings will range between the upper 50s to the mid 60s! Highs will top out in the mid to upper 80s. What a treat for the end of June and first of July!
Now the Bad News:
Due to the scattered nature of the showers and storms this weekend, many did not receive the much-needed rain. Officially, Chattanooga received only a trace of rain over the weekend and will likely end the month of June with only .73” of rain, over 3” below average. This will make for one of the driest on record. The record is .29” in 1944. The rest of this week will stay dry with just a few isolated afternoon storms this weekend. Yikes for our lawns and gardens.
July 4th Holiday Weekend: Moisture returns in the form of higher humidity for Friday and the weekend with a couple of weak disturbances moving in. Expect a few widely scattered afternoon storms, which should quickly die out in the evening in for Fireworks!
See you soon,
Brian
