Celebrities WE Care About: American Idols Bucky Covington, Rueben Studdard & Phil Stacey
Two Idols Coming to Town, Phil Stacey's Summer
Bucky Covington (Season 5, finished 8th)
Bucky says he got what he was looking for when he signed up for Idol.
His 8th place finish landed him a recording contract in Nashville.
Immediately after the show, he got a call from Mark Miller of Sawyer Brown who liked his style.
Miller would produce his first album, which was released last year.
It was the highest charting debut for a male country artist since since Billy Ray Cyrus's "Some Gave All," landing at Number One.
Bucky has had a busy summer, touring the country with Montgomery Gentry and on his own.
You can see him up close and personal at Lake Winnepesaukah's Jukebox Junction on Sunday, July 20th.
He's got two shows, at 3:00 & 8:00 PM.
Here is his video for the hit, A Different World.
Reuben Studdard (Season 2, winner)
The Velvet Tedd Bear is also coming to town this summer.
He will headline for the first annual Bessie Smith Heritage Festival on Saturday, August 23rd at the African American Museum.
Studdard is trying to recapture his initial success after winning Idol in 2003.
He has lost more than 70 pounds over the last couple of years, and just got married a couple of weeks ago in his native Birmingham.
Reuben is now working on a new album for release later in the year.
He'll also take on the role of Fats Waller for a national tour of the show Ain't Misbehavin' this fall.
Here is Studdard's triumphant return to American Idol this year, performing Celebrate Me Home.
Phil Stacey (Season 6, finished 6th)
This is also a busy time for Lee College grad Phil Stacey.
He's got a new album, a new single, a summer tour and an important musical debut on Sunday.
These days, Phil and family are based in Nashville, where he is supporting his debut album that came out this spring.
His current single isn't on that album.
It's called Old Glory and was released on the 4th of July.
He wrote it two years before getting on Idol, while he was still in the Navy.
On Sunday, he makes his Grand Ole Opry debut, which you can see on GAC at 8:00 PM.
Here he is performing Old Glory.
Phil is headed out west for the rest of the summer.
But you can catch him back in Cleveland this fall at the Foothills County Fair on September 27th.
Phil's new song: "Can you feel the Love tonight"
I'm ashamed to admit it, but being from Nashville, I doubted Phil had a chance...it's SO competitive here, and the singing I had heard from him on AI was good, but not what I'd consider great. I stand to be corrected. After hearing his UNBELIEVABLE version of "Can you feel the Love" (an all time fav of mine), on the radio tonight, I quickly googled all I could find from this man. And you know what I found out? He's not just good, he's GREAT! And I can't wait until tomorrow when I hit Walmart, looking for his new CD and that country disney CD just so I can listen to the song that will definitely make Elton John proud! Keep up the good singing, Phil!
Phil's new song: "Can you feel the Love tonight"
This is in addition to the previous reply, even though I titled that one "Phil Stacey." I wanted to let you know that you don't have to wait till Tuesday to get his cd. It has been out since April 29th, when it was released. You will also find "Country Sings Disney," which was released July 8th. You can listen to the whole cd on cmt.com . And "Old Glory," which was released around the 4th, is available on iTunes.
Phil Stacey
Thank you for your kind words! I am delighted with your assessment of Phil, as will his other "Philnatics." We have always believed him to be a great singer and artist. I would recommend you go to truveo.com and find his Opry performances. He performed the original version of his patriotic song, "Old Glory," there, with his brother, Keith, at the piano, a while back; and this past Saturday, he made his first appearance on the televised part of the Opry. He sang his first single, "If You Didn't Love Me," and the next one, "No Way Around a River." You can find all of these at his music myspace, www.myspace.com/philstaceymusic .You will agree with Ricky Skaggs, who was the host of the show that evening, and who is also from Kentucky, like Phil, that he can sing!
Phil Stacey
A correction: Phil's appearance on the Opry was on Saturday, July 12th. If the show airs on a Sunday, it will be a repeat. "Old Glory" was redone for airplay and is available on iTunes. The redone version can be heard on his music myspace, www.myspace.com/philstaceymusic . The youtube version you have for viewing is the original one, performed in Wichita, Kansas, last year, to help raise funds for the victims of the Greensburg tornadoes. He will be releasing another single soon, "No Way Around a River." And he is also on "Country Sings Disney," which is an album that came out this past Tuesday, July 8th.
