Mike Leach Offered UT Job?
The newest rumor concerning the UT coaching search involves Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach. A source of mine told me that he heard that a television station in Austin, Texas has leaked the information that Leach has been offered the head coaching job at Tennessee.
This information has not been confirmed at this time, but it would be interesting to see if Leach accepts the offer, if there is one, and when he would choose to announce if in fact he plans to head to East Tennessee. More information coming as more details surface.
I do find it interesting that no one has mentioned the name of the station, and I find the timing odd as well. I personally do not think that in the middle of arguably the most important coaching search in UT history that they would offer Leach at this point in the season.
Other coaching tidbits include talk about Lane Kiffin. Mike Griffith of the Knoxville News Sentinel says in his blog that a source close to the program told him that UT is interesting in Kiffin, and he believes that Kiffin has been or will be interviewed by Tennessee.
Brian Kelly is apparently still in the picture, but according to Griffith, Tennessee may not be sold on Kelly and his ability to recruit or win at the SEC level. Butch Davis has been mentioned as the “safest” choice, but he did say that he is not interested in the Tennessee job.
Dave Hooker covers Tennessee football for GoVolsXtra and his list of realistic candidates include Butch Davis, Brian Kelly, Tim Brewster, Mike Leach, and Will Muschamp in that order.
According to Chris Mortenson of ESPN, Tennessee has inquired of two NFL coaches to date. Former Vol assistant Lovie Smith and Jon Gruden. Word is, Tennessee wants to see if either coach has any interest in coaching for the Volunteers.
Gruden signed a contract extension with the Bucs after the 2007 season that makes him among the NFL's best-paid coaches. Smith signed an extension with the Bears after the 2006 season.
My guess is that the rumors will continue to fly for a while longer, and every coach seems to be fair game regardless of the situation. I also would think that if the rumors about Leach were true, we would have been informed of the specific information by now.
Look at us, please, don't look at Texas Tech
Teasippers are so transparent. Look at us, we're Texas. Blah, blah, blah.
Texas Tech 39, Texas 33
Texas: We're No. 3! Yee haw.
kushphog says
Hey Tech, we're # 2 now.

HOOK EM BEVO!!!!!!!!
Crazy indeed...
No way TN offered Leach at this point. Madness. Would be a nice hire though. Reality is Gruden. Don't believe the TV. Gruden is all but a done deal, all this other coach talk is smoke and mirrors by TN to protect Gruden. Go back to his press conference, he never said "no", he said he would be with the Bucs as long as the owners would have him. Guess who the Bucs owner is best friends with...going to have to dig. Chuckie is coming to TN. boom.
Guys it's a blog
This is a blog not an article. Personally, I like reading about all the rumors and the talk going on regarding the coaching change. It makes for good water cooler conversation. What else are we going to talk about until mid-December when Hamilton announces his decision?
Retraction?
Where is the retraction?
You know by now this is bogus.
Nice Try Austin have fun at

Radio Rumor
A caller in Knoxville on a popular sports talk show told the host that a TV station in Austin said that UT did in fact offer Leach the job and it's decision to accept at the end of the season. I can't find anything though to prove this is true.
funny, I am a vol fan living
funny, I am a vol fan living in the dallas metroplex and the talk here is kelly. leach to rocky top, dont get your hopes up...
I agree that the timing on
I agree that the timing on this one is odd. Don't think it's true, but hey, the rumor mill at least gives Vol fans something to talk about during one of the worst seasons in UT history.
true Vols see it for what it is.
I glad the true Vols see it for what it is. Even if the UT admin decides to extend an offer to Leach why would they do it now. I'm sure they are smart enough to want to see if he can pull off a big win. They would not want to distract his chances.
HAHA
This is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Tenn would have way more class than to formally approach a HC in the middle of a national title run.
I would love to see Leach in orange but the idea that a "tv station" leaked this sensitive info that NOBODY HAS ANY IDEA ABOUT, WHATSOEVER!
Wouldn't have anything to do
Wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that it came from AUSTIN would it? The Horns do have one loss and seem to still be bitter about it...
Mack's machine
Everyone knows about the UT propaganda machine being in full swing to detract from Tech's focus on the OU game this weekend. Just to let you know, the FBI is into the probe and is tapping and videotaping Deloss Dodds, Mack Brown, Ron Franklin, and several network executives, having secret lunches and dinners. They've also been alerted as to how Jamall Charles and Vince Young managed to stay in school at Ut, when they can hardly string two coherent sentences together. Granted all of this is strictly rumors, the real names have been witheld to protect the guilty. Granted that everything in this response is for entertainment purposes only, the fact is Ut provides rational individuals with such BS is entertaining enough without individuals having to respond to the aforementioned BS.
I live in Austin, watch the
I live in Austin, watch the sports daily, and have heard nothing of this sort. Is there any particular reason there is no mention of the name of the station except, perhaps, it isn't true?
ZOMG BOMC is at work.
ZOMG BOMC is at work.
I couldn't agree more with
I couldn't agree more with the previous posters! This is unacceptable and cannot be anywhere near the truth. Texas Tech will handle business properly in Norman and at home.
If it comes out of Austin it must be true...
Burnt Orange BS meant to distract TT.
Just an example of an Austin
Just an example of an Austin station clearly trying to distract Tech from their game against OU since it would benefit Texas for the Raiders to lose.
