Nightfall Preview: Asylum Street Spankers

More than 30 musicians have wandered through this band over the last decade.

It's the kind of outfit that could only be brewed up in Austin, Texas.

The origonal Asylum Street Spankers played old songs from the 20s & 30s in that strange Texas brew where Swing, Jazz, Blues and Country music all come together.

These days, they're performing more of their own songs in the old style.

They run deeply into the social commentary vein.

You won't hear any of their double (or single) entendre songs that they love so (this is their G rated show).  Just check out YouTube for all the dirty ones.

What you will hear is fiddles, banjo, washboard and commentary on the American experience from a band that's been around long enough to know how to entertain a crowd.

Here is the basic sound from a show at Smith's Old Bar in Atlanta.

But as you can see in this performance of Hick Hop, they are no slaves to the old music, if there is a laught to be had.

Natural Habitz opens the show at 7:00 at Miller Plaza.

The Asylum Street Spankers take the state at 8:00.
