Will the "Ghetto Grandmothers" Comment Hurt or Help Nathan Deal Get Votes?
Congressman Nathan Deal represents our northwest Georgia counties in Congress.
But he's always had trouble getting headlines out of the Chattanooga media.
Compared to Zach Wamp, Lincoln Davis & even Heath Schuler in North Carolina, Deal has had a very quiet career in Washington.
But now that he's running for Governor of Georgia, the spotlight is shining much brighter.
This hasn't been a good week for the Congressman.
He announced that he was ending a 20 year business arrangement with the state that landed him an ethics complaint and critical reporting in the AJC. (Here is Deal's response)
But the true "gotcha" moment came last weekend when he was speaking to a Republican group in Cherokee County.
He was talking about resistance to his bill requiring people to prove they are U-S citizens before getting medicare.
But he used an unfortunate term to describe older women who are legitimate U-S citizens but might not have proper documentation.
He called them "ghetto grandmothers."
Now the trouble with addressing Republican groups is that you can guarantee that some of them are supporting his Republican opponents.
So video cameras were rolling and at least two opposing campaigns were quick to post the videos and then send them to the media.
And that's how I can show you the "ghetto grandmothers" comment straight from the candidates lips.
This week, Congressman Deal issued this response.
“I regret my choice of words and in no way meant to offend anyone.”
And then he challenged his Republican opponents to put down their video cameras and quit taking his words out of context.
The question now is, will this hurt him?
The critics say it was a racist term and proof that he's not worthy of the office.
But will those core Republicans care more about the "grannies" or those illegal workers that Deal was talking about.
The publicity could actually help carry his message.
What do you think?
At any rate, one thing is clear. His opponents certainly think he's enough of a legistimate candidate to take these shots at him.
Not Shocked
This does not shock me. First off, he's a Republican. Second, he's white. Third, he's from the SOUTH. When you fine folks get your mindset off of the fact that you lost the Civil War, then maybe you will learn a modicum of Civility, Humanity and some Humility. This guy could learn a lesson from a former governor of Arizona. Evan Meacham used the term 'pickaninny" and was promptly removed from office via impeachment. It is truely sad when our elected officials can look no further than the mirror for their success. As a TRUE Native American, would it be reasonable for us to ask all in this country for proof of citizenship? Is it not enough that your forefathers came to this land and commited acts so not Christian like by enslavement, theft, murder and so on. Do you think that we forget? Well, I for one at times do forget. But when you have jerks like this guy, well then it brings back that sting. People like this guy make OUR COUNTRY divided. This should not, and will not unify us. This guy represents all that is wrong for America. This guy represents AmeriKKKa, and that my fellow "citizens" is dead WRONG.
Well, i think there should
Well, i think there should be user friendly system which is fair for every one in the case of the medicare as there are different categories of the patients, some are very serious and they need immediate attention, some are of less degree serious and some have minor injuries so these degrees of seriousness should be considered while making the system, Websites are always helpful in one way or the other, anyways, microsoft certificate a good way to get started to renovate your dreams into the world of reality.
Thanks
Micheal,
Do white men from the south
Do white men from the south always use those words in polite conversations? When it comes to race relations, he is a Uniter not a Divider, right? But maybe he thinks he only represents the white populous and the rest be damned.
The meal Deal should join forces with Orly taitz, he is a closeted Birther. Oh wait what this;
Judge Land and now judge Carter, smack down the crazies (case dismissed), poor little Birthers.
Not even “Fake News” Bill O’Reilly believes the crazies, how funny.

To all the birthers in La, La Land, it is on you to prove to all of us that your assertion is true (TOUGH WHEN YOU KEEP LOSING CASES), if there are people who were there and support your position then show us the video (everyone has a price), either put up or frankly shut-up.
In my opinion the Republican Party has been taken over the most extreme religious right (people who love to push their beliefs on others while trying to take away the rights of those they just hate) and that is who they need to extract from their party if they real want to win. Good Luck, because as they said in WACO, “We Ain’t Coming Out”.
I heard that she now wants to investigate the “Republican 2009 Summer of Love” list: Assemblyman, Michael D. Duvall (CA), Senator John Ensign (NV), Senator Paul Stanley (TN), Governor Mark Stanford (SC), Board of Ed Chair, and Kristin Maguire AKA Bridget Keeney (SC).
I wonder if she is a mail order bride, just like her law degree? She is perfect reporter material for “Fake News”, where unfounded rumors and innuendo reign supreme , unlike a our US courts of law, where you need to present documented facts, not half baked lies (prepare for more failures).
A lawyer, dentist, realtor and black belt, WOW I must say a JACK of all trades master of none.
NATHAN DEAL's COMMENT
"Ghetto Grannies" is a very descriptive term for a large segment of Democrat voters. Notice that I said "Democrat voters". Nathan Deal is a Republican. Of course there will be some socialistic ie. Communistic Republicans who will pretend to be offended, but not as many as the controlled media will say.
Mr. Deal has awakened (I hope)from the NAFTA nightmare that he voted for and is now ready to fight against the New World Order that Daddy Bush spoke about.
If you don't like the term "Ghetto Grannies" then stop having babies out of wedlock for generations, get off the Federal plantation slave-dole and move out of the ghetto. Simple!

I agree with you Nathan Deal.
Its not only the black population, its the Mexican population, and the white trash population.
Another WMD hunter
Nathan along with Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson and many others have been WMD hunters in Iraq looking for weapons and still trying to justify why we went to Iraq in the first place. The only thing they wants from this American grandmother is more tax dollars to spend on a war the American people should have never involved in.
Them and their other Tea Party Republican buddies supported the big oil companies in almost bankrupting this country. They are also supporting the insurance companies with the hurry up and die health care plan for the grand parents of this country.
Governor for the state of Georgia is a joke, he is not worthy of being a sewage inspector for the city of Atlanta.
This is the kind of
This is the kind of individual whom continues to create this divide in our great nation. He should, respectfully, retire and let the more open-minded and true individuals, who are dedicated to the American beliefs that all men/women are created equally and should be treated as such.
Nathan Deal
I agree with Nathan 100 percent. When the home owners in the state of Georgia get their property tax statement in the mail. They will agree with him.
Big oil
I doubt that you know anything about getting a barrel of oil out of the ground. The next time you need to fill up your tank with fuel, try water. It won't get you very far

As an English teacher, and a
As an English teacher, and a political progressive in Atlanta, I don't see where Deal screwed up, other than not using a P.C. subject very carefully. The operative word here is "paraphrase," which his remarks loosely indicate in this statement. He paraphrases a constituent's comments and makes an insensitive embellishment to the specific point that he makes about health care for illegal immigrants. I do not like Rep. Deal, or his right-wing agenda, but clearly this statement of his is a minor gaffe. God help us if this is an example of real hate speech, which I have seen posted in these comments here!
