North Carolina Voters Making a Difference in Presidential Election
Submitted by Reneé LaSalle on May 7, 2008 - 9:49am. News | PoliticsStates all over the country moved up their election dates so they could have a say in picking the next President.
So when we went to the polls in Tennessee and Georgia back in February.. We thought we might decide it.
Now three months later.. The democratic nomination is still up in the air.
And Tuesday voters in North Carolina wonder if THEY might be the ones to decide it.
Murphy North Precinct Chief Election Judge Teresa Thomas with the Cherokee County, North Carolina Election Commission says, "It's important for folks to feel like their vote matters. And this year it truly does."
For perhaps the first time in primary history North Carolina could decide who makes it to the White House.
Cherokee County Voter Mack Cowan says, "Feels good, because normally it's already decided by the time we have our primary, so its good to feel like you have a little importance."
Voter Nancy Bauguss adds, "I'd like to feel like we're gonna make a difference and we are making a difference this time, a big difference."
Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are battling for a shot at the Oval Office at a time in the game when in past years the nominees have already been set.
Thomas says, "It's exciting, its very exciting."
Obama is expected to win in North Carolina and Clinton in Indiana, but with only four more weeks of primary voting...
Cowan says, "Too close to call..."
Surprisingly though, in Cherokee County all the excitement doesn't necessarily mean more people are voting.
This is just one of the county's 16 precincts and poll workers say turn out is down.
Regardless, this is one primary election these voters will never forget.
Murphy Mayor Bill Hughes says, "All eyes are on Indiana and North Carolina and we're having our 15 seconds of fame now aren't we."
Polls in North Carolina closed Tuesday at 7:30p.m.![]()
