Big Brother or Safety.
It's an issue before Signal Mountain Town Council.
Members consider adding traffic camera's to the town's arsenal.
The goal, reduce speeding and crashes.
But the idea's not sitting well with a lot of residents.
Cameras like this one could end up on Signal Mountain.
Police chief Boyd Veal proposed photo enforcement after a traffic study backed up citizens complaints about speeding.
Nearly 90 percent of the people speed through town.
Chief Boyd Veal, "While we try to address that with traditional traffic enforcement efforts it became apparent that we might want to look at other options."
The council heard from Bill Kroske with American Traffic solutions Monday.
He told them fixed speed cameras similar to these on the Hixson Pike "S" Curves or mobile ones like this one used in Red Bank have been proven to cut speeding and crashes.
They snap shots of the speeding car and license plate.
The licensed owner gets a 50 dollar fine in the mail.
Joe Dumas, "In America you're supposed to be innocent until proven guilty. You don't get a ticket in the mail and then have to prove yourself innocent."
Residents don't like the extra eyes in the skies...calling it big brother and don't see a need for the extra protection.
Joe Dumas, Signal Mountain Resident, "We would be trading away our liberties and gaining nothing in the way of safety. We don't have an accident problem on Signal mountain now. Accidents are very rare in signal mountain and as another person said that probably means the speed limits are set too low."
Many look to nearby Red Bank where officials say the cameras reduced all crashes 20 percent asking at what cost.
They say there's a stigma attached to red bank because of its cameras.
