Year in Review: Rockslides, Rain and Wind Dominate Weather in 2009

Comments Below: 0

This has got to be the video of the year in our area.
Our Allen Fairbanks was there when the mountain collapsed on Highway 64 this fall.
But this wasn't the only slide this year.
Rocks bumbled down on both Lookout and Sale Creek mountains.
And flood waters washed away a chunk of Signal Mountain Boulevard.
signal     We're blaming weeks of rainy weather for the onslaught of rockslides this year.
And rain dominated our weather headlines for 2009.
WDEF News 12's Amy Katcher continues our year in review reports tonight with a look at the weather.

Just six days in, we learn 2009 will be a far cry from the dry times of years past.

Vickie Holt:  We'll watch it to see how high it gets in the next 30 minutes or hour or so.

Georgia declares: "Drought Over" June 10th.

But water was not the only surprise from Mother Nature this year.  Four tornadoes touch down on Good Friday.

Three days later a rare Gravity Wave and Wake Low toppled trees, killing a sleeping Etowah teen.

Sandra Corn: "They didn't know whether he was alive or dead. They couldn't get to him. The whole room was crashed."

In May, tragedy strikes a Rossville family when a tree crashes into a home on Roberta Drive.

Walker Co. Tree Fatal Yana Van Horn: "It's horrible that a
seven year old died.  It's a miracle that six didn't."

Flooding again tops the news in late September.

Firefighters rescue people stuck in flooded cars and rain swollen streets September 20th.

Richard Yarber: He was just hanging on the fence..that was his only hope.

Two days rescue crews recover the body of Sylvester Kitchens, Jr a mile and a half from where he jumped into the flood waters on a five dollar bet.

Vice President Joe Biden tours the damage in Georgia on the 25th.  The president declares Catoosa, Walker and Chattooga Counties disaster areas.

The South Chickamauga Creek crested at its fourth highest level ever during 2009.

and early on the morning of December 9th, more heavy rain washed out a large chunk of Signal Mountain Boulevard.

You'll find that and a complete recap of 2009 during our 30-minute Year in Review special.
You can see it on New Year's Day at 12:30.. Right here on WDEF News 12.
