Folks driving down I-75 have wondered about the exit between Ooltewah and Bonny Oaks Drive for years.
The new exit will ease congestion along Bonny Oaks and allow direct access to Volkswagen's Enterprise South location... And it finally opens this summer.
Ask Mapco Manager Steven Peffer and business is good, "It's crazy... Starting about 6:AM it's like you open the flood gates."
The convenience store sits off I-75 at Bonny Oaks Drive.
It's one of the few locations near Enterprise South to grab a soda or fill up your tank.
Peffer says, "We have lines, two registers running, people backed all the way to the cooler. It's helping business out a lot."
He says business picked up the moment Volkswagen started construction, "We've got our breakfast rush, lunch rush, dinner rush. It's been great."
Right now Bonny Oaks Drive is the main artery to the Enterprise South site... It's a two lane route which already gets congested and will have a 4 lane by-pass this summer.
The beginning of the I-75 Enterprise South connector is already graded and cut, eventually the road will stretch all the way to Highway 58.
Officials expect the first $8 Million portion of the parkway to open late this summer...just in time to funnel Volkswagen's 2000 production workers to its new plant.
Production begins in early 2011.
For Steven Peffer it's a double edged sword.
The plant opening will bring more people... But many of them will use the new parkway off the Interstate.
He laughs as he says, "Hopefully we've given them good enough service they'll still come by here."
Officials haven't said when the rest of the road, from Enterprise South all the way to Highway 58, will be complete.
Previous estimates on the total price tag top $22 Million.
