(WDEF) Hundreds of job seekers spent their Wednesday at Chattanooga State Community College to take part in the Beaulieu of America job fair.  Most of the jobs are for Beaulieu's plants in Georgia but some are for the Bridgeport, Alabama facility.  And the job seekers came from far and wide to take advantage.
David Ungate was a job applicant at Wednesday's event.  He said, "It's surprising me that as many people who are trying to apply for professional positions are not dressed for the part in my opinion."
Ungate has part-time work right now, but he hopes to get a full-time job as an engineer.   He added, "It's just disheartening a little bit sometimes to realize that the work is not out there as much as we would like it to be."
Fellow job seeker Ray Duke worked for Unum as a systems analyst for 17 years before being laid off in September.  Duke said, "In my opinion it's real hard for people that's over 45 to come back into the job force and I really have never been out of the job force and I just wonder why its so hard for older people to get jobs."
Given the slow recovery to an almost unprecedented recession in this country means companies get their pick of the litter.  Vicki DeFalco is Beaulieu's Director of Employee Development.  She said, "We're in a position where we can recruit the best and the brightest and we're wanting to take advantage of that opportunity."
But Ungate says he remains optimistic since he has plans he can fall back on, something he sees as a necessity right now.  Duke is also hopeful because of his MBA, engineering and business degrees.  He said, "It's just a matter of time. I've just got to keep beating the path."
Beaulieu says applicants will be contacted within the next two weeks if they're wanted for an interview.
The company hopes to hire immediately and some of the hopefuls could be on the job by next week.
