Bus Crash On I-40 Near Knoxville Kills 6, Shuts Down Interstate

(WDEF) DANDRIDGE, Tenn. A passenger bus has overturned in Jefferson County, and the Tennessee Highway Patrol confirms 6 people are dead, and multiple injuries are reported, according to CBS affiliate WVLT.

Interstate 40 is closed in both directions and traffic is being diverted, the station reported.

Knoxville Fire crews and ambulances from Knox County are responding to the scene. Jefferson and Hamblen County crews are also responding to the crash.

East Tennessee Children's Hospital says they have been asked to be on standby to receive patients.

Tennessee Safety Department spokeswoman Dalya Qualls said the accident happened near mile marker 423.

Qualls said they do not yet know whether another vehicle was involved. They also do not yet have any information about possible injuries.
