Chattanooga has a brand new flag.
The City Council voted six to three Tuesday night to adopt the new design encouraged by Office of Sustainability Director David Crockett.
Crockett said the old flag looked too similar to the flag for the state of Tennessee.
And that the new design will stand out.
But it was a hotly contested topic at tonight's meeting.
UTC student Taylor Thomas was against the new flag.  He said, "I believe that we have a bad tendency to, I guess, dismiss parts of our history.  I think that we see this especially in, I guess, the preservation of old buildings.  We're prone to tear them down in favor something new."
Mayor Ron Littlefield responded, "Displaying our seal is something that we should do.  And the flag is one of those opportunities that we have to display our seal."
Debra Scott, Andrae McGary and Peter Murphy were the opposing votes.

As a lifelong Chattanooga area resident (Soddy-Daisy), I can honestly say I never recall the official Chattanooga flag. I looked it up on Google and once I saw it, I knew it was Tennessee related, but had no idea where in Tennessee. The new flag that was adopted by the city council absolutely represents Chattanooga and as soon as you see it, you know exactly what it represents. Although I hate loosing anything historical, I think that they did the right thing this time. RickAtNyte
