CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee(WDEF) A Chattanooga police officer is in stable condition after he was shot Tuesday evening inside the East Lake Housing Development on the 2200 block of East 26th street.

Chattanooga police said the officer was responding to a theft complaint on the 2500 block of 4th Avenue when he encountered a male suspect. Investigators said the suspect pulled out a gun and shot the officer.

The officer was taken to the hospital for treatment of the non-life threatening injury.

According to police chief Bobby Dodd, it is unclear if the suspect was involved in the original theft complaint.

Chief Dodd said, "We encourage family members, pastors, friends, somebody talk with him and tell him to turn himself in."

Law enforcement from multiple agencies are assisting in searching for the suspect who is described as a black male.

"We've got officers here, local officers, county officers, a lot of the surrounding agencies have sent some officers that are gonna help us to track the suspect down," Dodd said.
