CLEVELAND, Tennessee -(WDEF) While most people enjoyed a warm and dry sunny weekend, the Byers family spent countless hours cleaning their basement which flooded after several days of continuous rainfall.
Billy and Bridgette Byers could not believe there eyes when they came home to a basement that was under several inches of water.
"It was a disaster," Billy said.
"My mouth just hit the floor. I thought I was going to fall over," Bridget said.
The couple just purchased the home four months ago. Once all the water was pumped out, they realized the foundation didn't have proper insulation to keep water from seeping in. The couple said the straw that broke the camels back was finding out from neighbors that the home has a history of taking in water.
"If had known it flooded in the past, I would have walked away," said Bridgette when asked if she would have purchased the home if she knew it had a history of flooding.
Timing is very bad for the couple because they no only didn't have flood insurance but Billy just lost his job a few days ago so there's no money available to make repairs.
"It just all hit us at once. We got a two year old and an eight year old and one on the way so I don't know how to explain it to them," Billy said.
Fortunately, the couple has neighbors who were willing to help them pump out the water.
