CHATTANOOGA, TN (WDEF-TV) Knowing what to do when someone is being abused was the point of the Domestic Violence Awareness Program that was held at the Jewish Cultural Center.

Dr. Charlotte Boatwright was the guest speaker and had a very simple message.

She said, “The impact that family violence has on all of us in the community.”

She stressed that violence is learned in the household and then spread outside of it.

The most important thing we can do is speak out and report it when we see it.

“This problem grows and flourishes in an atmosphere of silence, secrecy, and isolation,” said Dr. Boatwright.

According to Chattanooga’s Public Safety Coordinator, statistics indicate that domestic violence outweighs gang violence 55 to 1 here in Chattanooga.

So this forum is to reach out help.

“As a community we say this is not appropriate,” she said. “We don’t want this kind of behavior going on in our families because it harms us all.”
