CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee(WDEF) - An overnight domestic dispute quickly turned into a SWAT situation that lasted nearly 10 hours.

Police said Alexander Petrochko got into a dispute with a woman inside a home on the 300 block of Tremont Street. Before officers arrived on scene, Petrochko reportedly fired a hand gun into the air.

"When officers got on scene, the victim had apparently gone outside. The officers met the suspect who had a scoped rifle on his front porch. He then fled inside. The SWAT team was eventually called after that," said CPD spokesperson Tim McFarland who confirmed Petrochko was in possession of two weapons when officers arrived.

For nearly 10 hours, police tried to get Petrochko to give up and come out. They repeatedly used a loud speaker pleading for him to surrender and even fired gas grenades through the front window.

Meanwhile, surprised neighbors were waking up to scene of flashing police lights, news media and roadblocks.

"I just wonder why people would behave this way for no reason,"
said neighbor Ashley Wright.

"We actually moved from Memphis and never had anything like this  happen in Memphis so it is not something you would expect to happen around here," said neighbor Jensen Hart.

After a long overnight attempt to get Petrochko to surrender, authorities realized he was not in the home. He was somehow able to elude authorities and contact his attorney.

Petrochko was later taken into custody at another location and he now faces simple assault charges.

As for the women who called authorities, WDEF was told she did not sustain any injuries.

Was gas grenades necessary? Good God the police act like thugs these days? I mean you're not going to war with a foreign country these are citizens for crying out loud? I understand he had a gun, he somehow left & now that house was damaged for nothing....The Chattanooga PD should have to be responsible for the repairs? You should on use force when necessary! Talking about being trigger happy? Sounds to me people should fear the police more than a criminal?
