Within minutes of getting off the school bus, Superintendent Johnny McDaniel says a freshman at Walker Valley high school collapsed in front of his classmates.
Another freshman student started having difficulty breathing around the same time.
McDaniel says, "We called the EMS ambulance responded efficiently and transported them both to the hospital."
Bradley County School officials tell us the boys took muscle relaxers the night before and were drinking cough syrup that morning.
Locals are surprised this happened at a school that typically excels.
Joan Waddell says, "I've never heard anything like this about Walker Valley. I'm hurt. I'm hurt for the boys and I'm hurt for the family and I'm hurt for the school."
McDaniel says faculty and staff have also focused concern on their other students.
"I've sent some support staff from central office to go to Walker Valley. We've notified our school psychologist. We have school counselors in the building who work with the students every day," he said."
The Bradley County Sheriff's Department was called in to investigate.
There are still questions left unanswered, like why these boys did this, and where they got the drugs."
The school has a zero tolerance policy for drugs.
