Some North Georgia inmates now have a chance to better themselves while they serve their time.

That's thanks to a partnership with the Citizens for Literacy, Georgia Northwestern Technical College and the Catoosa County Sheriff's Department.

Earning your G-E-D in prison is nothing new unless you're in the Catoosa County Jail, and now get that chance.

"It shows them somebody really cares whether they go on and do it or not,” said Shirley Smith of Catoosa Citizens for Literacy.

Smith also said that they are going to pay the fee for the inmates who take the GED. It’s a service they provide to all Catoosa residents.

Catoosa County Sheriff, Gary Sisk, is proud to see this come together.

“You know, if they don't even have that basic milestone in their life then that just sets them back even further,” said Sisk.

25 to 30 percent of their inmates don't even have a high school diploma and that makes it harder for them to succeed after they're released and easier for them to return to these prison walls.

"All of this is just trying to make them a better productive member of society, and curb that vicious cycle of recidivism, repeat offenders. 50% of our population in the Catoosa County Jail is probation violation,” said Sisk.

The Georgia Northwestern Technical College wants to help with improving inmates’ chances of success, because they know that more people with a GED will help the community greatly.

"All of our partners, we realized that's going to contribute to community quality and also economic development in the area,” said Sherry Riley the Director of Instruction for the Adult Education Program for Georgia Northwestern Technical College.

Sheriff Sisk has also implemented other programs to help all the inmates at the Catoosa County Jail. He hopes this cuts down the number of repeat offenders.

I see no reason why they should not be held responsible for the cut off calls, whether it is a cellphone or a landline. There is a distinction between Cut Off Calls and Dropped Calls. Cut Off Calls are calls where it still counts time as if the two people(inmate and the party called)are still in conversation but, neither party can hear one another. Dropped Calls are calls that are self explanatory they are dropped due to weak signal or the phone dies. Again I only feel that Securus should be held responsible for retuning the calls lost because they were cut off. Not the dropped calls. I have myself made a blog in lieu of a petition. Because not only do I want people to sign the blog/petition but, also to tell their stories as well. I don't know if this is exclusives to the CCA Silverdale Detention Facility but, I would just like people out there experiencing the same situation to know that they are not alone in this there are other people out here that know what you are going through and I know it can be frustrating when Securus representatives act as though your questions and concerns are irrelevant and unimportant. Please help me and the others I feel are being preyed upon by the very people they're expecting to be there to help them. (This is the last part.) I do appreciate you time and patients for reading all that I have posted. Please take the time to visit my blog/petition if you or someone you knows has been effected by this.... Thank You.

These men and women are not undeserving of communication with their friends, family, and loved ones. Specifically-to my knowledge-they are singling out cellphone users which I feel is uncalled for, irresponsible, and an atrocious mismanagement of the system. Securus Tech is being Predatory when they tell us that because it is a cellphone they cannot return the calls. Is it a case of cannot or will not? I don't know. I feel they are hiding behind archaic by-laws that they spout off just to keep our money and fail to provide the services paid for. Think about it logically if you pay a cellphone bill and your calls keep getting dropped and you call the service provider and they tell you that even though you didn't get to make a single call they're still going to bill you. Logically you stop using that provider and switch to a more appropriate phone service provider. In this case the inmates are incapable of switching providers but, we as a people should hold Securus responsible for this "thievery" by the Securus Tech company. It was just here recently that a bill was passed to make it more affordable for families to put money on accounts to make the calls and now all of the sudden they are being cut off. This may be unrelated but, it just seems a odd coincidence. The principal of the matter is we aren't getting our full calls and someone should be held responsible for returning the cut off calls. I personally understand that if my cellphone drops a call they aren't responsible for that. In this scenario yes I do not hold them responsible I understand that it is the fault of either the cellphone service provider, signal, or the malfunction of the cellphone itself. On the other hand if the call is cut off then I do feel they should return the calls. People on landlines are experiencing the same situation as those of us who use cellphones. if their calls can be returned then so can the calls those of us using cellphones.(This is part 3)

Hello my name is Candice J Truelove, I need your assistance in making this public. Myself and many others are putting our faith and hard earned money into Securus Tech for services they are failing to provide. The calls are inexplicably being cut off. No one is trying to be held responsible for replacing the calls from inmates at CCA Silverdale Detention Facilities to family & friends.(This is pt 2)
