Sometimes the lessons you learn in school stick with you for life.

At Birchwood Elementary one literacy teacher is prepping her kids to be life long communicators and problem solvers.

Freida Wagenblast is this week's Golden Apple Award Winner...

Today's lesson in Freida Wagenblast's 5th grade class is about better self expression...

Ms. Wagenblast always knew she wanted to be in education... and after 22 years elementary kids have a special place in her heart, "At this age they still love their teacher and they want to please."

Wagenblast has a love for literacy.

She says through literacy her kids learn more than sentence structure... They learn to communicate, "We're all trying to help children be problem solvers and to work well in groups and to get along with each other."

And for at least one Birchwood 5th Grader those lessons are working...

Libby Oliver reads from her Golden Apple nomination letter, "She is a 5th grade teacher that makes things that are hard into easy things."

Libby says Ms. Wagenblast keep the class on track.

She says thanks to Ms. Wagenblast her writing and even her understanding has improved, "Last year I didn't get as much stuff as I needed and in 5th grade I get all the stuff that I need."

For Ms. Wagenblast that's what it's all about... Giving her kids the tools for success, "Not just the material things, the pencil and the paper...but it's getting that encouragement, that "stick-to-it-iveness" that we know they'll need to survive later on."
