DEKALB COUNTY, Alabama(WDEF) - An attempt to swim across the Little River in has ended tragically for one Georgia man.
It happened Saturday night at Little River Canyon National Preserve at Martha's Falls where authorities said Ricardo Perez, 19, of Rome Georgia and some of his friends were attempting to swim across the river.
Perez reportedly slipped under and never resurfaced. Authorities say his friends tried to assist him but they could not locate him.
Nearly an hour after he slipped under the water, Authorities found his body in nine feet of water.
According to a Park Ranger press release, Little River Canyon Superintendent Gail Bishop stated this is the first drowning accident in 2013; although there have been four additional rescues in the river corridor this year.
The National Park Service warns people not to cross the Little River because of the underlying force of the water generated by movement down the rocky falls and ledges.
