CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) - Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam launches a new statewide health and wellness initiative.
The Governor visited Blue Cross, Blue Shield in Chattanooga Wednesday morning to kick off the "Healthier Tennessee" program.
Haslam says the initiative will encourage residents to be more physically active and eat nutritious foods like fruits and vegetables.
The program also asks people to stop using tobacco, or never start.
Governor Haslam says a healthier Tennessee could lead to more jobs.
"When companies look at where they're going to locate they look at scores of factors but one of the key ones is health care costs. And, the healthier employee base that they have, I think the better, the more attractive we'll be for companies to continue to locate here."
The initiative brings together employers, health care providers, schools and others to promote healthier behaviors.
Tennessee has high rates of high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes and heart disease.
