LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Tennessee(WDEF) -  A man who fell while rope climbing on Lookout Mountain had to be rescued after he sustained some very serious injuries.

It happened Sunday afternoon.

Authorities told WDEF he was reportedly with a group of hikers on Sunset Rock along the side of Lookout Mountain when disaster struck.

"This party was climbing and fell about 50 feet and in doing so he hit another ledge that was about 30 feet up from the main trail," said Chief Bob Lewis of the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Rescue Service.

Rescuers believe the fall was the result of an equipment malfunction.

"He was climbing the rocks and using rope as a safety. The safety popped out of the rock and that's what caused him to fall," said Lewis.

Despite wearing a helmet, the man suffered sever head trauma along with other injures. It took crews nearly two hour to get to him then eventually carry him to safety.

Once he was loaded into an ambulance, the man was driven to a nearby Lifeforce helicopter where he was flown to Erlanger Hospital.
