A house fire turned deadly in Murray County Tuesday night.
The fire started around 7:30 at a double wide trailer at 460 Hensley Road in Chatsworth, Georgia. Kiernan Withrow, a neighbor said, "I heard something pop and I asked my parents if they heard it, and my mom went and checked. She saw the fire right back there, and it was over the trees. It just lit up the sky. The Withrow's immediately called 9-1-1. Murray County Fire Department and Chatsworth Fire Department firefighters arrived to the double wide mobile home engulfed in flames.
Ed Gregg, a neighbor said, "I walked down to take some pictures as they were fighting the fire and seen the EMT's. They were all there. There was no fuss, so I figured nobody got hurt, nobody was home that's great." However someone was home and firefighters battling the blaze came upon a man's body on a bed in a bedroom. Gregg said, "I came back and told my wife someone died. She made some phone calls because she's been here all her life, and found out that blunt force trauma was one story. Another story was someone was shot and the fire was set intentionally."
Neighbors say the man had been living in the trailer for a year and was a divorced father. John Cherry, Captain of Investigations with the Murray County Sheriff's Office said, "I don't know if its one or however many it is that stays off and on periodically, but I know the family member, or I know the parent had picked them up yesterday from school." The Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Murray County Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal's Office sifted through what was left of the home Wednesday morning. Cherry said, "The crime scene techs from the GBI are processing the scene to collect any evidence or whatever and give us a determination on what they think has happened."
The body was sent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for an autopsy. No names have been released, and there is no exact cause of fire at this time.
