A passer-by called 911 after seeing a Jeep in the Sequatchie River, but little did he know there was a 9-year-old inside dead.
Sheriff Ronnie "Bo" Burnett, with Marion County, says, "It was like the child was asleep in the backseat."
When emergency crews arrived around eight Saturday night, they found the boy's mother, Lindsey Newsome, in the passenger's seat semi conscious and her boyfriend, Nicholas Mosier, in the driver's seat in the same condition.
Sheriff Burnett adds, "It was odd, I'll say that."
Sheriff Burnett believes the couple went mudding.
They crossed the creek, and were on their way back when they got stuck, he was says, but here is the unusual part.
Sheriff Burnett adds, "The water level was about below the door of the jeep. The child was not submerged in the water."
In fact, he says, there was no water in the jeep.
So, now they are left wondering how did the child die.
Sheriff Burnett says, "It was such a chaotic situation. I really didn't the time to talk to them."
We do know the child was not from Tennessee.
We are told he actually lived with his father, and only visited his mother on the weekends.
Sheriff Burnett says, "There are a lot of things suspicious to us about the situation."
Sheriff Burnett says the boy was healthy, aand just played football hours before this happened.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol has now charged the couple.
Mosier is facing a DUI, possession of prescription drugs, felony reckless endangerment, as well as traffic charges.
Newsome is facing agravated child abuse and neglect, felony reckless endangerment, and a prescription drug charge, that's according to the Associated Press.
John Young, Newsome's neighbor, says, "There's just too many drug problems going on."
We tried to talk to Newsome's family about the charges, but they actually grabbed our camera and threatened us while on a public road.
Sheriff Burnett hopes the child's autopsy report will come back tomorrow, and depending on what it says, there could be more charges.
We did find out Mosier has been charged at least ten other times in the past, but no word on if Newsome has any prior record.
