CHATTANOOGA, TENNEESEE (WDEF-TV)-- The newly transformed park in South Chattanooga had its ribbon cutting ceremony Saturday morning.

Many in the community came out to witness the new play area, and now they see their voices are heard.

"It's been something that's been needed in this area for a long time," said Ex-City Councilman Manny Rico. "But it was the persistence of the people saying we need a park, so we gave it to them."

It took two and a half years to complete the park. Something residents say they were not sure would happen.

"That's been the sentiment of the Southside for years," said Tony Hare, a resident of the Alton Park and a South Chattanooga Leadership Advisory Council. "When I first got involved they said they've been hearing the same thing from politicians for the last 20 years."

Hare is proud to see progress and hope it doesn't end here. Knowing this work is not for them, but it's for the children.

Hare said, "This is the day to see all of our work worthwhile, to see the kids actually playing."
