(WDEF) U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander released the following statement on his vote to reopen the government until Jan. 15, 2014:

“I voted in September against shutting down the government, and today I voted to reopen it and to make sure that the United States pays its bills on time. We need to redouble our efforts to fix our country’s $16.7 trillion federal debt. We could start by passing the Corker-Alexander plan to reduce out-of-control entitlement spending by $1 trillion over the next 10 years.”

Alexander and fellow Tennessee Republican Senator Bob Corker introduced in February the Fiscal Sustainability Act, which would reduce the growth in entitlement spending by $1 trillion over 10 years and help make entitlement programs, including Medicare, solvent.

Wow...we should determine who adds "pork" to these bills and get them out of office no matter whether Republican or Democrat. I am sick of all the off issue projects added to such bills. These provisions do not benefit the citizens of the state or the country. If Lamar runs again, he's losing at least one vote.

Alexander received a nice commission for defecting against Republicans: WASHINGTON — A deal to reopen the government and avert a debt default also includes language authorizing more than $2.8 billion in funding for a locks and dam project championed in the past by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. The provision would steer $2.918 billion in funding to the Army Corps of Engineers for the Olmsted dam and lock project on the Ohio River, and would benefit Kentucky, Tennessee, and Illinois.

Proud of Senator Alexander! Doing what's best for the country and not being afraid to ruffle your own party's feathers. He has always been willing to reach across the aisle when it is best for the country. This partisan bickering has to stop. We need more deal making and less division - there's a country to run! Also, kudo's to Senator Corker for his vote to end the shutdown and avert default!
