CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee(WDEF) - For many children, the start of a new school year is only days away and that's why several organizations are making sure kids have what they need to start the new season off on the right foot.

The World Restoration Center in South Chattanooga held a back-to-school bash and prayer event Saturday afternoon to motivate kids before they head back to the class room.
Kids received everything from free school supplies to eye exams.
Pastor E. Jonathan Thomas said it's all about making sure kids have what they need to be successful in the class room.

"We're big on trying to push going to school, graduating, staying in school and things of that nature. We try to help them by giving them some of the tools they will need to be able to be successful in what they do in life," said Pastor Thomas.

While the World Restoration Center was holding it's back-to-school bash, Temple of Faith Deliverance Church sponsored a back-to-school block party across the street from the East Lake public housing development.

Church officials said the event allowed children to have fun and get motivated before the start of school. Kids received free school supplies along with other information they will need for this upcoming school season.

Pastor Razorio Slack said the event was also chance to help what he describe as an under-served community with lots of poverty.

"Many of them are economically disadvantaged and disconnected. As a church, we're trying to bridge that gap between services and other peoples needs," said Pastor Slack.

Children's Hospital at Erlanger and Kohl's Department store teamed up to hold a back-to-school safety fair.

The event focused on everything from seat belt safety, DUI prevention and dangers of texting while driving to fire, pool and bicycle safety.
Organizers said every time someone buys a specific item at Kohl's, part of that money pays for child safety campaigns put on by Children's Hospital.

"Every dollar counts and without Kohl's support, we would not be able to do a lot of the things that we normally do. It's by the community actually providing that support for Kohl's and purchasing those books and stuffed animals on a daily basis or monthly basis that helps us," said Erlanger Hospital administrator Cindy Rhodes.

Kohl's Department store also presented Children's Hospital with a donation close to $53,000. The money will go toward an injury prevention program.

Chattanooga police and Hamilton County sheriff deputies also took part in back-to-school events by holding their annual back-to-school 'Shop with Cops' program.

It happened Saturday morning at the Walmart on Signal Mountain Road.
Police and deputies purchased school supplies for approximately 150 elementary school kids who are considered under-privileged.
The money to purchase those supplies comes from public donations to the International Brotherhood of Police Officers.
Members of the local 673 chapter say this event also helps to build bridges between law enforcement and the community.

Fortunately, those officers and deputies were able to get more bang for their buck because Tennessee is one of 17 states offering a sales tax holiday this weekend.

There's no sales tax on clothing items and school supplies of $100 or less.
Computers priced under $1,500, calculators, backpacks and tablets are also tax free.
