According to one 3rd grade student "The playground is just such a mess!" But it won't be for long...thanks to one teachers contest entry, Snow Hill Elementary just won a recess re-do.
"We need it and I know how they help, so I put in the nomination we are very blessed!"
Exposed nails and a crumbling foundation caused children to get hurt. PTA president, Rachel Barnes says it was time for a change.
"We closed the playground completely down for a couple of weeks cause it got to the point where we couldn't let them go out there like that, it was just too many incident reports after incident reports."
The announcement came as a complete surprise to school principal, Sandy Barnwell. Everyone was on their feet cheering as soon as they heard the news.
The Kids are excited for the re-do, but for one student... The chance to play here means a lot more.
Alex Neely says,
"I get to actually play on the bottom playground"
While the playground was dangerous for all the kids... For Alex, it was even more unsafe...
"I have Osteogenesis imperfecta, which means I have Brittle Bone disease... I break very easily."
Thanks to everyone that voted on the Kidd Kraddick website, Alex will be able to play with the other children at recess.
Those involved say social media played a big role in Snow Hill's win. Radio show co-host, Big Al Mack came to the school to present the check.
Parents and other members of the community have already come forward offering help. It's safe to say, the school is ready to get to work!
"As soon as we get the go ahead, we'll have a big party!"
The school plans to start making some changes right away.
