TVA Says Watts Bar Unit 2 is On Track

T-V-A says Unit Two at Watts Bar is on track. The company released its quarterly update on construction progress today. The moth-balled plant that was abandoned in the 1980s is scheduled to be up and running by 2015. Officials say there are currently 2500 people working on the construction at Watts Bar. And once it's finished, 700,000 homes and businesses will get power.

Watt Bar I is a model of one of the worst construction disasters in reactor history. It was 23 years late and over $6 billion over budget (over 600%). If they had known this going in, they never would have started the project. Watts Barr II is following the same path, as recently as April of this year TVA announced the reactor would be 3 years delayed and another $2 billion in unexpected costs. We can certainly expect more cost overruns and more delays at Watts Bar 2 and more lies from TVA about how the project is going just fine until they are forced to admit, yet again that it is not. They are telling you everything is under control. They are probably lying. And with these persistent cost overruns, these are not the second cheapest form of power they have.
