CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee(WDEF) - Now that 2014 is here, many people have thought about making a commitment to transforming their body into a lean and fit machine.

WDEF hung out with certified personal trainer Erin Adamson-Collis at the Rush Fitness in Hixson. She said the first step in transforming the body is starting off slow to prevent injury.

"You didn't gain the weight overnight. You're not going to lose it overnight. If it takes beginning with just five minutes a day and working you're way up slowly then that's what it's going to take," Adamson-Collis said.

Experts say 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercises five days a week will help burn calories but you also need to add weight resistance to build muscle.
"The more muscle on your frame, the faster your metabolism is. The faster your metabolism, the more fat you're able to burn even doing mundane things like sleeping," Adamson-Collis said

But doing all that cardio and pumping iron is only half the equation. People who are seeking to get lean, tone and strong will also need to consider a clean diet.

"Add something new to your diet. Add a new type of vegetable to your diet. Add  a new type of fruit to your diet; some leaner protein choices and some complex carbohydrates," said Parkridge Hospital dietitian Jamie Welch.

People looking to get in shape must also overcome the fear of walking into a gym filled with folks who are muscular and well toned and like to show it off.

"There is definitely intimidation coming into a gym for the first time. People tend to see a lot of the veterans in here who are extremely fit and think that they are too far gone but everyone began some where and it's your turn to begin," Adamson-Collis said.
