CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee(WDEF) - Students at Chattanooga State and UTC might have to pay more for their education thanks to a proposed tuition hike.

"The fact that I'm going to have to pay more means that I may have to take out student loans, and no one wants to do that. But since tuition is going up, it's something I might have to do. That doesn't make me happy at all," said Chattanooga State student, Joseph Callahan.

Tuition at UTC could potentially increase up to 8-percent. While community colleges like Chattanooga State could experience a tuition hike up to 10-percent.

"It's definitely disappointing to hear, especially since the U.S. wants to compete with other countries by keeping kids in school and entering the work force to drive our economy up. It almost discourages you thinking that every year you face a increase in tuition," said UTC student Logan Haynes.

State education officials want to increase tuition cost to offset reduced state funding at public universities and colleges.

But don't tell that to Emily Pearson. She spent part of her Friday morning trying to help her son enroll at Chattanooga State. She says higher tuition cost means more stress for students and their parents.

"My son is almost in that position. It would definitely be an extra burden on not just the student but the parent who might not be able to contribute that much," Pearson said.

State education officials say projected tuition increases will vary from school to school.

Officials at Chattanooga State and UTC said it's too early to know how much tuition will increase. They're waiting on a June meeting with the Tennessee Board of Regents Finance Committee to get the final numbers.
