CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee(WDEF) - Two boys who reported missing late Sunday afternoon were both found dead in the Chickamauga Creek.

Rescue crews make a gruesome discovery after nearly 20 hours of searching for Kentory Ray, 11, of Chattanooga and Thomas Ruffin, 11, also of Chattanooga.

"Both bodies have been recovered and both families have been notified. We have met wit them and discussed the facts and details in the case and what we found," said Chattanooga police chief Bobby Dodd.

Authorities say both boys were found submerged in Chickamauga Creek close to where they entered the water. Investigators believed the two most likely drowned when strong currents swept them away.

On Sunday, Ruffins and Ray along with two other boys were at the creek playing.
Close relatives told WDEF the boys often went there since it was located right behind their homes. The 11 year olds reportedly got into the water and were pulled by heavy current until they were no longer visible. The two other children who didn't get in the water ran for help which prompting a search and rescue effort on land, water and by air.

"We've had probably over 100 plus resources of folks and different agencies out here since 4:30 yesterday looking for them and unfortunately it didn't end the way we had hoped it would," Dodd said.

The two boys were students at Tyner Middle Academy. The principal there issued a statement that said "Out hearts go out to their parents and other family members in this time of crisis."

Both bodies were taken to the medical examiners office for an autopsy and according to police, the investigation is ongoing.
