Think Blue signs can be seen just about everywhere you look at the Volkswagen Chattanooga plant.
Guenther Scherelis, VW Communication Manager said, "Volkswagen has a company wide strategy called Mach 18 and part of this strategy is the Think Blue factory. And we developed our goals until 2018."
Over the next 5 years the company will work on tighter system controls, better system efficiencies and narrowing temperature controls.
"We chose what we call key performance indicators that reflect the energy consumption, the carbon footprint, emissions of CO2, emissions of volatile compounds and also waste," said Scherelis.
Initial priorities and targets will consist of what's known as the switch off plans and energy management.
By simply turning off lights and equipment during a shift, engineers calculated a savings in energy of more than 750,000 kWatts per year.
Other plans have been put into place that include a newly installed 33 acre solar park.
To increase energy awareness the company will also provide basic education for their employees.
