Mayor Berke Reassures Volkswagen of City Commitment

Chattanooga, Tenn. (Feb. 18, 2014): This afternoon, Mayor Andy Berke sent a letter to officials at Volkswagen, reassuring the company of the City of Chattanooga’s commitment to both Volkswagen and the potential expansion of the Chattanooga plant.

“As you have heard consistently from my administration for nearly a year, Volkswagen has the City of Chattanooga’s unwavering support as the company considers expansion. We are committed to seeing Chattanoogans producing SUVs here,” said Mayor Berke.

The letter comes days after local reports concerning the expiration of the state’s financial package for the Chattanooga expansion.

“I want there to be no confusion about my position. The City of Chattanooga has never withdrawn its support for this project, and our prior level of commitment remains unchanged,” stated Mayor Berke.

Mayor Berke went on to detail the City of Chattanooga’s actions to move the project forward.

“We have been in touch with Governor Haslam’s office to continue our work to ensure the expansion moves forward. In addition, my staff, including members from our Public Works Department and our Purchasing/Procurement Division, have been aggressively looking for ways to expedite the infrastructure work that would be required for the expansion.”
