CHATTANOOGA, TN (WDEF) Beginning with the first of the year, the incandescent light bulb as we know it, is headed for oblivion.
American companies will no longer be able to manufacture or import the glass bulbs which use heated wires to generate light.
In case you haven't kept up with the latest on Charles Edison's amazing invention, we'll throw a little light on the subject.
It's time to get acquainted with the LED bulb.
JASON RUCKER, ASST. MGR, LOWE'S "This is the up and coming thing for energy efficiency. This is the bulb that is starting to revolutionize energy efficiency."
The incandescent bulb didn't die a sudden death. The verdict was handed-down in 2007, when President George W. Bush signed a law to replace standard bulbs with more efficient devices.
To be technical, only about 10% of the energy these traditional bulbs use is for light according to the EPA.
Taking over now, in addition to LED's are halogens and compact fluorescents, which you're probably already using and complaining about.
JASON RUCKER "They have a starter on them...any florescent tube has to heat. The way the incondescent bulb lights up is it basically turns energy into heat..and lights the filament."
Seventy-five- and 100-watt incandescents were already banned in 2013.
Now, once the 40 and 60-watt bulbs -- the most popular in the country are gone, you'll spend more to light the house.
How do you compare brightness from one to the other?
JASON RUCKER "The good thing about it is most manufacturers now will actually put out what the equivilency of the bulb is.. So if you wanted a 40 watt output bulb, you would simply go to an LED bulb that has a picture of the old style 40 watt."
That LED bulb will cost you about 10-dollars, but it'll last 10-thousand---and as much as 50-thousand hours.
That 40 watt incandescent now blows out after about a thousand hours.
Three way incandescents will still be around.
So, for those who just can't quit yet, some enterprising shop owners are offering to change any regular lamp from an on-and-off---to a three-way.
