CHATTANOOGA, TN (WDEF-TV) -- Congress won't let the U.S. Postal Service close on Saturdays, but its all for expanding home parcel delivery to 7 days a week.
That service will begin next weekend under a special arrangement with Amazon.Com.
That's welcome news for many postal service workers in the tri-state area.

Amazon.Com is playing "can you top this?" with its competitors as the busy holiday shopping season nears.
The online retail giant is enlisting the U.S. Postal service to deliver packages on Sundays.
Amazon Prime customers have been able to get that service for some time, but the actual delivery was made by FedEx, UPS or some other service.
Postal service employees in Chattanooga think that's a great idea.

COLLEEN BRACY, CHATTANOOGA LETTER CARRIER "I think that its..its going to provide a better service to all of our customers, as well as increase revenue for the postal service."

That service will only be available in Los Angeles and New York starting this weekend, but Amazon says it wants to offer it nationwide by next year. But Amazon want the time to set-up its programs.
The Postal service says it will not require additional workers.

COLLEEN BRACY "We have a lot of closings that have happened..and so there's a lot of people that may, you know, come over to letter carrier craft." "I think it's going to be great, I hope it comes to Chattanooga."

Longtime Amazon Prime customers are also praising the idea.

JAMES TENNISON, AMAZON PRIME CUSTOMER "Especially because of work and I don't like a package being left on the doorstep and I have a busy work schedule. Sometimes they don't even leave them on the doorstep and you have to go and pick them up..I think its really a great idea."

Most of Amazon's sales are in the continental United States, and on its busiest day last year---the start of Christmas shopping season, it handled more than 25-million orders.

Even before the agreement with Amazon, package delivery was one of the bright spots with the U-S Postal Service.
Now the door is open for other giant retailers to join Amazon in Sunday U-S-P-S deliveries.
