CHATTANOOGA, TN. (WDEF) - That car gets how many miles per gallon?!!
Some incredulous visitors to the Chattanooga Convention Center heard the answer again---261 miles per gallon.
Its the amazing Volkswagen XL One which was on display for delegates at the Environmental Journalists conference.
The big car companies usually wait until the annual conference of Environmental Journalists to show off the latest technology.
The conference is in Chattanooga this year, and this was the star of the show, the Volkswagen diesel hybrid called the XL-One.
And you heard right---it gets 261 miles per gallon.
OLIVER SCHMIDT, G.M. OF ENGINEERING & ENVIRONMENTAL OFFICE , VOLKSWAGEN "This is the world's most fuel efficient, most aerodynamic production in the world."
With the emphasis on reducing aerodynamic drag, the XL-One design is similar to those futuristic cars dreamed-up in the 40's and 50's.
But this one has a lightweight carbon fiber body and a wight of only 1750 pounds.
OLIVER SCHMIDT , VOLKSWAGEN "This is a technological showcase. In this car we put everything that is at the moment possible to build a fuel efficient vehicle."
It was a favorite among the writers.
JIM MOTAVILLI, NYT FREE LANCE CONTRIBUTOR "You know I write primarily about electric cars..and Volkswagen is starting to get into that..they want to be the leader in electric technology..they've declared that that's their intention. You may see some plug-in cars come out of Chattanooga here ..or maybe hybrids."
If you have 145-thousand dollars you can have one of these...if you happen to live in Europe.
There were only 250 made this year---and they are not available in the United States.
But they foreshadow the future.
JIM MOTAVILLI "What I think is the inevitable electrification of the automobile..I think that is what's coming."
The fact that the XL-One is made by Volkswagen made it a hit here in the home of the Passat.
