COLLEGEDALE, TN  (WDEF) ---  Community leaders in eastern Hamilton county today got their first look at plans for the Collegedale Commons.
And city leaders expect it to become the Center Piece of that fast-growing community.
Long time Hamilton county residents sometimes think of Collegedale as the little non-descript farming community near Southern Adventist University.
Things have changed a lot in the last 10 year.  The population increased 27% in 10 years, Volkswagen is on their front door step, and now city leaders are planning to continue to build the community of tomorrow .
The key will be called Collegedale Commons  near the city hall.

MAYOR JOHN TURNER, COLLEGEDALE  "It would be a significant focal point for the city...for community related events. Such as a farmers market, or a theatrical event..musical shows.. Really anything we want it to be because the concept is a multi-use construction."

Key stakeholders, community organizers and elected officials were called to city hall for the unveiling of the idea.
David Barto says the idea is to bring a sense of "center" to the city.

DAVID BARTO, CHAIRMAN, COLLEGEDALE TOMORROW  "When Collegedale was formed just out in the county, carved out, there was no city center, there was no old courthouse..the closest thing we had top a center was the village  market over on Campbell.

LARRY HENRY, CHAIRMAN, HAMILTON CO. COMMISSION  "Naturally, a concern is where the financial part is going to come from ....You know, the grants out there available for it ..That would be wonderful."

The mayor says the entire project is estimated to cost  6-to-8 million dollars, with most of the money coming from grants, and not from any tax increase.

Leaders hope Collegedale Commons will be ready for the city's 50th anniversary, 5 years from now.
It'll be built on property now owned by Southern Adventist University just south of the city hall.
