HAMILTON CO.,TN (WDEF-TV) - The intersection of Ooltewah-Ringgold Road and Standifer Gap is dangerous!
There have been 30 crashes there in the last 5 years.
But, fixing that problem is easier said than done.

The crossroads of Ooltewah-Ringgold Road and Stadifer Gap is not a true intersection. The East-west Standifer Gap is skewed.
But that's only part of the problem---Ooltewah-Ringgold traffic doesn't stop.
Mark Hancock travels through there everyday and his father-in-law almost died there 2 years ago.

MARK HANCOCK, WANTS SOMETHING DONE "He was traveling down Ooltewah-Ringgold road and a car came across ..just didn't stop ..and just plowed right into the side of him..and knocked him up into the yard on the other side."

Mark has attended the community meetings
MARK HANCOCK , NORTH GEORGIA RESIDENT "You know, some kind of flashing light on both sides ..You know, make people a little more aware to stop there would be good."

That intersection is complicated because you have county, state and federal money involved. TDOT administers the program---80% federal and 20% county funding.

JENNIFER FLYNN, TDOT "The takeaway is that Hamilton county and TDOT are aware that there's a problem at that intersection ..It could use some improvement and Hamilton county is working toward making sure that happens.

Even a temporary fix is difficult.

TODD LEAMON, ADMINISTRATOR, HAMILTON CO. PUBLIC WORKS "Really a traffic signal ...we'd still have the issue with skewed alignment and really the roundabout corrects that skew because of basically how they come into the roundabout."

LARRY HENRY, DIST.7, COUNTY COMMISSIONER "I was in the towing and recovery business for nearly 40 years out here in east Brainerd..and certainly during my time in that business, we've worked a number of accidents up here..its always been a dangerous intersection."

All of the various agencies hope to clear the right of way and possibly get started on the roundabout later this year.
