It's been nearly a month since Superstorm Sandy slammed into the East Coast.
Still, some survivors will spend this Thanksgiving with no power and without a home.
Tonight we have a first-hand account of the devastation zone from a local couple just returned from volunteering with the Red Cross.
When the tornadoes hit Cleveland in April of 2011, Stan and DiAnna Stanich couldn't just sit by and do nothing.
They got involved.
Stan Stanich, Red Cross Volunteer, " To get them back on their feet. "
They felt the same when Sandy struck the East Coast.
DiAnna Stanich, Red Cross Volunteer, "It pretty much looked like a war zone."
The couple traveled hundreds of miles to help... on their first Disaster Relief Operation with the American Red Cross.
Stan, "It was a kind of heart wrenching experience actually."
The couple spent two weeks in New Jersey first working with the Red Cross Safe and Well website, a resource for finding lost loved ones.
For six days they went searching for people wherever they were allowed.
DiAnna, "It was so dangerous power lines were down and looting was taking place so the military took control."
They kept an SUV stocked with supplies for anyone with a need...and manned shelters.
DiAnna, "The clients were on a roller coaster, an emotional roller coaster sometimes you just put your arms around them and cried with them."
The stories of the people they helped and hugged remain fresh in their minds.
Stan, " I picked up the panda bear and I walked over to her and gave it to her and she gave me a hug back and it was immediately just almost put me in tears."
With so much that still needs to be done...the couple's already been called for another tour.
Stan, "There's a lot of people who don't have anywhere to live ."
DiAnna, "When we left some of the areas would not even get power until December 1st. We have so much to be thankful for."
That's why they're ready to answer the call...again.
The Stanich's say they were overwhelmed by the welcome they received from the people they went to help.
So far, our Red Cross chapter has deployed 69 volunteers to help with Superstorm Sandy, 18 from the Chattanooga office.
