CLEVELAND, TN (WDEF-TV) A soup kitchen in Cleveland celebrates its one-year anniversary that all started with a 17 year-old girl who urged her parents to help bridge the gap in the fight against hunger.

Lindsey Armstrong said it started from one event, seeing a lady outside of her school.

"I just walked up to her and introduced myself and brought her a little bit of breakfast and just learned that she didn't get three meals a day, and that's when I knew this is what I'm supposed to do,” said Lindsey.

The Armstrong family took that one moment from then 17-year-old Lindsey's life and now they make it their mission.

It has been one year since then. They went from serving 15 people to around 100 to 300 people every week.

These meals are welcomed by many, but most view these Saturday lunches at the Salvation Army Kitchen as more than just a meal.

Terry Atkins said, "It means a whole lot to me that they take the time out their busy schedules to help the homeless people."

Through this service they have built many relationships, and it keeps everyone coming back including volunteers like Whitney Stevison.

“Besides just, you know, being able to offer them a lunch or a breakfast, we're able to build relationships with them, which I think is the most important thing,” said Stevison.

And Lindsey and the rest of the Armstrong family have work to build great relationships with everyone from their volunteers to those they serve.

"We are family," said Lindsey. "That's the whole point of it being called the family kitchen."

The Armstrong family is looking to get their own building. They currently use their home to store food and say they would like a bigger location to serve more people in need.
