For the first time in 21 years, Catoosa county will be getting a new sheriff.
There's been a slow but steady turnout of voters as Larry Black and Gary Fisk settle the issue in a runoff following the July 31st primaries.
Gary Sisk and Larry Black have well organized campaigns, and signs..and they were active again Tuesday near the polls.
The two veteran officers made speeches and even debated the issues of being sheriff of Catoosa county.
Black was the top vote-getter in the primary, getting 43 per cent.
But Sisk, former chief deputy, has picked-up the endorsement of outgoing sheriff Phil Summers, who is not running for re-election.
Both are optimistic about the outcomes, but neither candidate is predicting victory here in the final hours.
GARY SISK, SHERIFF CANDIDATE "I think we've fought a good campaign...hard-fought, sure we've put all of our effort into it...because this is something we're passionate about."
LARRY BLACK, SHERIFF CANDIDIATE "We stuck to the issues all the way through this thing. We've talked about qualifications..education and experience, but we've also talked about and stressed the role of sheriff..and what we feel like that role is."
Supporters for each candidate were anxious to see the race decided once and for all.
ROBERT POHLE, RINGGOLD "From what I've read, its black..that's the one I seem to favor..both of them seem to be o.k."
DENICE WATKINS, RINGGOLD "Can you tell us which one you favor? Gary Sisk."
As for plans if elected---
GARY SISK "Elections are hard on everybody...not just the candidates that are running for the office but for everyone back at the office. So it would be good to get everybody calmed down and get ready for some goals and objectives."
LARRY BLACK "The last 4 years I've been the Drug Task Force Commander, we're seeing so many problems with drugs. And so many problems with addiction..the drug trends with our teenagers ...And young adults with pills, pills, pills...its a real concern."
Another north Georgia sheriff's run-off will be resolved when the polls close at 7.
Eight year veteran Dade county sheriff Patrick Cannon is facing off with challenger Ray Cross in the republican primary.
The winner will face democrat, and former sheriff Phillip Street in November.
