A Grundy County woman and her 17-month old granddaughter are recovering from a house fire that took the life of her husband last week.
The family says no one would have made it out alive if their uncle hadn't been there.
The hero is Jerry "Bulldog" King.
He says Phillip and Roxanne Bark's son came banging on his door the night of the fire asking for help.
The couple and their 17 month old granddaughter Riley were still inside the burning home.
King had to climb in a bedroom window to get to the woman and baby.
Phillip Barks died in the fire, and King says he couldn't find him.
Bark's son says he is grateful his mother and niece are alive and that's the way his father would have wanted it.
"He would've been mad if we would've gotten them him out and not gotten them out. Only thing he'd want is to take care of mom and that baby, and I will if it takes every last breath," Barks said.
Barks says Roxanne and Riley are in stable condition at Vanderbilt hospital, but still have a long road of recovery ahead of them.
The family has set up a fund for Roxanne and Riley at Citizen's Tri-County Bank.
