As Americans buy more guns, others wonder if we need tougher gun control laws.
In Hamilton county, some residents are looking at a more immediate solution: adding more school security.

Could an armed school resource officer have stopped Adam Lanza's murderous attack at Sandy Hook?
Hamilton county has 23 SRO's, but there are 80 schools in the district.
Bobby Bush, is the long-time SRO at East Hamilton.
He's an ever-present deterrent to violence.

WDEF NEWS 12 THIS MORNING "OK, let's see what folks are saying on facebook about SROs..etc."

That discussion energized our webpage and facebook, with some saying a tax increase to provide more school officers would be a good move.

SHERIFF JIM HAMMOND, HAMILTON COUNTY "It all comes down to money...if tax-payers are willing to pay the cost of being able to put them there...I've heard everything from 'let's just hire private security in there or let's use veterans coming back..or retired police officers..all of those have a cost to them."

The sheriff says its not out of the question.

SHERIFF JIM HAMMOND "Its doable..it just has to come down to what the will of the people is...the elected officials then can make the hard decisions."

But members of the county commission say the school safety issue is much on their minds.

GREG BECK, COMMISSIONER DIST. 5 "I certainly agree with one day being able to have an officer in each one of the schools. Now whether the Sheriff's department does it or the school department does it, that's up for debate."

CHESTER BANKSTON, COMMISSIONER DIST. 9 "Our kids today..some of them are trained to be afraid of policemen. And if we train them up in elementary school to let them know that they are their friend...and they can teach them things as well as protect them."

One thing was accomplished by the Connecticut tragedy---the desire for tighter security at the lower grades as well as high school.
