SIGNAL MOUNTAIN, TN. (WDEF-TV) --- There are more problems with the W road than first suspected.
It's now getting some major repair work after serious faults were detected.
We now get a close-up look.

The W road on Signal Mountain has been getting a lot of attention lately from the Hamilton county public works department.
In April it was closed for a few days for patching, but three weeks ago things got serious.

JOHN AGAN, ENGINEERING DIR., HAMILTON CO. PUBLIC WORKS "What ended up happening at that point was the cracks began to exhibit some severe distress which prompted the county to take a pro-active action and close the road."

The W road is 121 years old and no one knows for sure what's been going on under it over the years.
Hamilton county called in a speciality crew from Geostabilization International.

NATE BEARD, REGIONAL DIR., GEOSTABILIZATION "We have a 150 foot section that has experienced some tension cracking...and is likely to see a catastrophic failure if not addressed quickly."

A 100 foot long section collapsed after the work began.

NATE BEARD, REGIONAL DIR., GEOSTABILIZATION "This was a naturally occuring landslide that happened after the rain event last weekend."

The work today was to stabilize the roadway for this weekend's expected heavy rain.

JOHN AGAN, ENGINEERING DIR., HAMILTON CO. PUBLIC WORKS "The W road is a secondary access to Signal Mountain and we fully understand the impact that it has to be closed for up to 12 weeks to make these emergency repairs."

The county is paying Geostabilization 776-thousand dollars for the work, which includes a 5 year warranty.
Engineer Nate Beard says safety is the number one goal, both for motorists and hikers on the W road and for the workers themselves.

John Agan says the project should be completed within the 12 week work window, which should have it opened again in July.
