(WDEF) American Legion Names McMinn County Sheriff as Tennessee’s Law Enforcement Officer of the Year

McMinn County Sheriff Joe Guy has been selected as the 2013 American Legion Law Enforcement Officer of the Year for Tennessee. Guy is set to receive the award this coming Saturday at the American Legion State Banquet in Nashville.

“Any service recognition is a blessing,” said Sheriff Guy, “but I am especially humbled when the service recognition is from a veteran's association, from people who have literally defined the meaning of service through their own sacrifice.”

The award nomination was begun earlier this year by Gordon Mikitka, Commander of Post 11 located in Etowah in McMinn County, and the East Tennessee American Legion Membership Chairman.
“The reason for this award is that the preamble of the constitution of the American Legion states that our organization is dedicated to to “uphold and defend the constitution of the United States”, and the second thing is “to maintain law and order”. And that’s what it’s all about,” said Mikitka. “These things are what Sheriff Joe Guy is doing. He’s making a difference in our community. He has done so much for our county. We’ve needed him for a long time.”

Guy’s nominated was also supported by employees within the Sheriff’s Office. The nomination letter reflected Guy’s professional and personal commitment to moral values, support of his officers through better training and equipment, his dedication to community involvement, and successful efforts in reducing crime as well as reducing McMinn County’s meth labs.

“There are many other more deserving officers than myself,” added Sheriff Guy, “but I'm proud to be able to represent all of our state's law enforcement officers, especially my fellow Tennessee Sheriffs.”
