Cathy Wilson, Former Ohio Resident, "I thought with my Ohio license and maybe my social security card that I would be able to get my Georgia license."
There are curves ahead for Georgia drivers... Learning curves. Cathy Wilson just moved from Ohio to Georgia to care for a disabled friend, but didn't know just how many documents are now required by Georgia Law for a license.
Cathy Wilson, "For the residential documents I need to have two and I only have one."
In addition to two documents proving a Georgia residence, the new law requires drivers to provide a birth certificate or passport, and a document with their social security number. The changes have spurred long lines... and return trips for many drivers trying to bring all the right paperwork.
Anita Vick, GA Resident, "To get your license you actually have a bring a LOT of stuff. Like I've got a little file right here that you have to have."
Brittany Shaw, WDEF News 12, "Many of the people I've talked to said they're actually leaving the DMV because they don't have all of the newly required documents."
Cathy Wilson, "We knew we couldn't get 'em today, so we decided to leave."
And those who stay... Wait it out. Kevin Brown had been at the Dalton DMV for five hours when I spoke with him.
Kevin Brown, GA Resident, "It's been okay for me but it's been hectic for a lot of people. I know a lot of them have been here since I've been here."
Brown says he noticed many drivers leaving because they didn't have the right documents. And he says those who stayed were there for four hours. Other drivers agreed.
Anita Vick, "You need to plan to make a day of it."
Maybe even a couple days... If you don't have the right paperwork when they call your number.
