DALTON, GA. (WDEF-TV)-- A Dalton man ended up in jail for most of the weekend after he was accused of sexual battery against a Dalton high school cheerleader.
Its the kind of thing you might expect with teenagers---some might call it a prank, but this was more serious than that.
It happened with hundreds of people standing nearby and it wasn't done by a fellow student.
This personal assault led to charges against an adult man.
The stands were filled for the cross-town rivalry---Dalton High and Northwest Whitfield County.
It was an exciting game, with Dalton the eventual winner.
But during half-time one of the Dalton Cheerleaders became a target.
SHERIFF SCOTT CHITWOOD, WHITFIELD COUNTY "This gentleman apparently just walked by the cheerleader and grabbed her backside...there was filed a complaint..we check on everything and on approaching the individual ...realized that he was under the influence to some degree and all the officers elected to place charges against him."
Forty year old Jason Patrick Alford of Dalton was charged him with sexual battery against an individual under the age of 16. He was also charged with possession of alcohol on school grounds after his backpack was opened.
The Dalton cheer leader told officers that she recognized Alford from a previous incident where he had been tossed out of the stadium for taking pictures of the cheerleaders.
SHERIFF SCOTT CHITWOOD "My understanding , there had been almost a stalking incident before ...Its our belief he may have been attracted to her in some nature...and then when Dalton went to Northwest...went to the game."
Alford was taken to jail where he eventually made bail of 85-hundred dollars on Sunday morning.
SHERIFF SCOTT CHITWOOD "You know the charge itself is not that uncommon...the incident of Friday night is uncommon."
We were unable to contact Mr. Alford at his home for a comment.
