WHITFIELD CO., GA (WDEF-TV) ---- Dalton/Whitfield county leaders say they don't anything about a proposed new flooring company that could pump as many as 2000 new jobs into the area.
But city and county officials say they wouldn't be surprised if it does happen.
North Georgia is now showing signs of recovery from the 5 year long recession.

MIKE BABB, CHAIRMAN, WHITFIELD CO. COMMISSION "2000 jobs, I can tell you that we haven't talked with anybody who's immediately going to bring 2000 jobs to Whitfield county....we're always talking to people who are willing to bring jobs to Whitfield county..or some other county."

A published report of a the new plant with 2000 new jobs is circulating around the state of Georgia...and the focus is on the Carpet Capital of America---Dalton/Whitfield.
The company is Engineered Floors, according to the Chattanooga Times-Free Press, and it would be the brainchild of carpet pioneer Bob Shaw.
The mayor says he also has no firm information.

MAYOR DAVID PENNINGTON, DALTON "Keep in mind that the carpet industry is retooling. So, new jobs in one factory may eliminate jobs in another factory. So, how many net new jobs this is going to bring we don't really know ..whatever this is. This shows the power of Dalton and a homegrown industry."

Any announcement of possible new jobs makes north Georgia residents perk up their ears. The area has seen unemployment rates soar past 10% for the last few years. The carpet industry took the biggest hit.
But Babb and Pennington say there have already been major hires in recent months.

MIKE BABB "The unemployment rate is dropping which has to do with the turn-around in housing sales..which we knew that would help."

DAVID PENNINGTON " Shaw, Mohawk, Beaulieu have all had expansions over the last couple of years in Dalton , that never makes the news for whatever reason."

There is another element in the equation, according to the Mayor.

DAVID PENNINGTON "If suddenly we had 2000 jobs new jobs in the carpet industry..we'd have a difficult time filling those jobs. It's not the unemployment here people think there is."

No answers now to the rumored expansion of jobs.

Georgia Governor Nathan Deal will make an appearance in Dalton on Thursday.
No indication that he is brings news of economic expansion.
